Nilgai Foods is a Mumbai-based food start up, led by entrepreneurs Arjun Gadkari and Abhay Jaiswal. The company manufactures and distributes two FMCG brands - PICO and COCOFLY - which are sold across the country through modern trade supermarkets, general retailers and online grocers.
The duo describe what they do as “building F&B brands for 21st century India", alluding to their mission of making premium packaged food more accessible to the Indian consumer.

Before starting Nilgai Foods, Gadkari and Jaiswal knew each other socially in London, which is where they began the ideation process that culminated in founding Nilgai Foods. Initially, the plan was driven by two macro trends that the founders believed would change the way urban India interacted with food:

The penetration of the internet would encourage culinary exploration beyond Indian food

It became apparent that there could be an opportunity in presenting new styles of cooking and eating, while at the same time retaining a familiar angle through locally sourced ingredients and playing with flavours that are inherently Indian. The founders believe that the key to winning over the Indian consumer is to bridge the gap between traditional Indian cooking and international cuisine in an affordable and approachable manner.

PICO, the first brand launched by Nilgai Foods, aims to become India’s go- to hot sauce, offering a range of signature sauces that give a burst of flavour to anything you are eating. Using the tagline “Jitna Spice, Utna Nice", the team want to own the positioning of ‘the spice experts’, and play into India’s love for chilli. “For a country that is inextricably linked with spice, there is no dominant hot sauce brand" comments Gadkari. “We want to become India’s favourite hot sauce".

COCOFLY, meanwhile, follows the same vision and belief system as PICO, but the end result could not be more different. As one of the first coconut water brands in the country, COCOFLY is a 100% nariyal paani with no added sugar and no preservatives. The team have made sure that the water extracted from young, green coconuts is repackaged in a more convenient Tetrapak carton with as little change as possible. The result is a great tasting alternative to other packaged drinks that has all the goodness and none of the guilt. From children to fitness enthusiasts, COCOFLY’s natural goodness can be enjoyed by anyone; from yoga centres and hospitals to bars and nightclubs, COCOFLY’s natural goodness can be had anywhere. The team believe that health is becoming increasingly relevant to the Indian consumer, and at an MRP of Rs.30, COCOFLY is now an affordable and convenient way to adopt a healthier, guilt-free lifestyle.

The team’s vision for both brands goes far beyond Indian soil: the founders believe that the brands they are building have global relevance and plan to start exporting both PICO and COCOFLY this year. Within India they plan to grow their 1000 store distribution reach 5 times in 2016 alone.
